On this page you can see examples of work commissioned in the recent past - these are in my chosen medium of pastel. I normally work at the studio from photographs I have taken on the spot , often within West Cumbria, though I can also work from reference photographs supplied by the client if they are of sufficient quality. Sometimes the precise choice of view is left up to me, for example if asked for ''''a painting of Buttermere'''' , sometimes an exact viewpoint is specified, or ''hills to be included'', or recently I've composed a number of photographs ,then discussed and selected the choice of reference image with the client. Today this can be done via e-mail too if the client doesn''t want to travel to the studio. Popular subjects have been a personal favourite view in the landscape, the clients'' house or other view in their home town. The paintings have been well received as gifts for people leaving a workplace or retiring, or as wedding/ anniversary/ birthday/ Christmas gifts of course.
The price for a framed pastel painting in my ''standard'' size and choice of framing, which as from 2016 is a plain square cut solid oak of approximately 60x47cm (external frame size) done to commission will normally be between £350 and £380 for a West Cumbrian subject - with occasionally added costs for example for more than normal time time spent on location, expenses getting to the location, or for a particularly complicated or detailed view which takes more time, or certainly for a larger picture. Smaller sizes are possible up to a point, with some reduction in cost. There is a limit as to how small it is possible to work effectively in pastel. These and any other requirements can be discussed individually.
I strive to give value for money, this is painstaking work and at my current rate represents a charge of approximately £9.00 per hour.
